CONCERT AND BOOKING INFORMATION

Thank you for considering The Surfaris to play at your event. Typically, our concert sets are approximately 45 minutes to 90 minutes. This time is jam packed with high energy authentic surf rock music 1960's style, with Bob Berryhill speaking, giving historical tidbits and highlights within the set. The band is willing to be flexible, so if your program has specifics other than the above information, let us know and we'll plan according to your needs as much as possible.

Sound Technicians:

Please contact the Surfaris directly to discuss sound/stage setup needs well in advance of the booked date so that the band can do their very best for your event. Click on the Stage Plot and Sound Rider links for detailed information.

Basically, the Surfaris are a 4 piece band: 2 guitars, bass and drums, with vocals. The amount of sound equipment needed depends on variables like the size of the venue and the number of people in attendance. If your current sound system is not able to meet requirements stated in the rider, rental equipment may be needed.

Product Sales:

Please provide a product table for CD and T-shirt sales and an autograph table located either by the stage or in the entrance of the venue. For large events, merchandising booths will be necessary for high volume sales and autographing. Responsible volunteers for the tables are also requested to handle sales.

Meals/Drinks:

Healthy foods (fruit salad, veggies, bagels, or similar items) would be great before the concert. Bottled water, soft drinks and hot tea are preferred beverages. If sound check and/or performance run into the lunch or dinner hour, sandwiches or a hot meal would be appreciated.

Green Room:

A dressing facility/room is needed near the staging area for the band.

Transportation and Hotels:

Airport pick up: The band will need a vehicle large enough to carry personnel, luggage, product and equipment in travel cases. The Surfaris generally travel with 4 to 6 persons, depending on the situation.

Hotel: Please arrange for business class hotels, close to the event.
2-3 clean, non-smoking rooms are requested.

Thanks again for your interest in booking the Surfaris. To inquire about or to book a date, please call or e-mail.

BIOGRAPHY

THE SURFARIS

featuring original guitarist,

Bob Berryhill

Co-author and recording artist of Wipe Out and Surfer Joe.

Bob began playing guitar as a young boy, growing up in Southern California. He was inspired by a ukulele player he saw performing during a family vacation to Hawaii. This trip also sparked his interest in surfing. While surfing up and down the California coast, before co-writing and recording Wipe Out at the age of 15, Bob played in other bands such as Norm Thurber and The Oddesies.

The Surfaris began their fourty plus year career by composing and recording Wipe Out, one of the most popular songs recorded in a generation. Wipe Out, Surfer Joe and others captured the sound of the early 1960's. Initially catapulted by the California surf culture, The Surfaris transcended the local scene into international stardom. The original band disbanded in 1966. Since then, Bob continues to play the music and tell the amazing story behind the music of THE SURFARIS.

WHO WROTE WIPE OUT?

People ask this over and over again, so here goes: In winter of 1962, Bob Berryhill, Pat Connolly, Jim Fuller and Ron Wilson went out to Pal Recording Studios in Cucamonga, California and recorded Surfer Joe, a song they wrote about a dream that Ron Wilson had. The band needed a B side, so after some jamming, brainstorming and 3 takes, Wipe Out was born. Though many have tried to claim writing/recording/producing credits for Wipe Out over the years, only Berryhill, Connolly, Fuller and Wilson are the true authors and recording artists of Wipe Out with the crazy laugh intro. The Berryhills paid for the recording session which included one hundred 45 records, and The Surfaris' DBA (which Bob still owns). Wipe Out and Surfer Joe were released as a single and also on the Dot Records Wipe Out/Surfer Joe album in 1963.
